Kafunta River Lodge

Sitting right outside the South Luangwa National Park, next to a sizable floodplain and watering hole, with the Luangwa River just beyond — Kafunta River Lodge is one of Kafunta Safaris' three premier properties.
South Luangwa National Park has a deserved reputation as one of Africa's best game viewing destinations. Activities from Kafunta River Lodge centre around game drives (day and night) and walking safaris, all led by excellent guides. The game drives are the favourite activity at Kafunta River Lodge, starting with the exciting river crossing at the pontoon, just minutes away from the lodge. You may encounter vast herds of elephant, buffalo, hippo, zebra and an assortment of antelope. Predator sightings are also common in South Luangwa with lion and leopard in abundance and wild dog present in the area.

The afternoon game drives culminate with the amazing African sunset. Celebrate with a traditional evening cocktail before continuing into the night safari in search of nocturnal animals. Seasonal walking safaris concentrate on the nuances of flora, fauna and tracking, immersing you in untouched wilderness.
At Kafunta River Lodge, each of the luxury private chalets, the main lounge and the dining decks overlook the game-rich floodplain. 10 chalets constructed of wood, with thatched roofs and interiors of stone and wood — set on stilts about a metre off the ground. The eight safari chalets are delightful and spacious, while the two luxury chalets feature an upstairs viewing verandah and lavish bathroom. Each chalet includes en-suite facilities with hot and cold running water, mosquito nets, electric fans, tea and coffee facilities and private verandahs. You need not leave Kafunta River Lodge to experience breath-taking wildlife.

The lodge's Wildlife Hide gives you a front row seat to the floodplain and waterhole in front of the lounge. Be it a family of elephants, a few giraffes, an inquisitive puku, a discreet water-monitor lizard, a couple of saddle-billed storks or our resident fish eagle, there is always something to observe. A great addition to your safari experience is Kafunta's Fig Tree Spa. Tucked away at the foot of the giant fig tree, their intimate spa offers a variety of massages and treatments designed to spoil you. Fitness buffs will find the lodge's gym discreetly set at the edge of the property. Central to the lodge is their lounge and dining area, thatched in a traditional African style. Unwind in the sofas near the wild mango tree, the cosy fireplace or the reclining sunbeds by the infinity pool. When night falls, you'll be treated to sumptuous candlelit meals under the vast African sky and a serenade of hippos wallowing in the waterhole.
